BREATHING NEW LIFE

This re-imagined and reduced new production of Bizet’s most famous opera features the spoken dialogue of the original script, but is set during an early 20th century era of civil war and unsettling social atmosphere. An all-female creative team breathes new life into the powerfully beguiling gypsy Carmen, who has no rules when it comes to seducing the soldier Jose, but his growing desire to keep her triggers a web of jealousy and murderous rage.

Performed with the Columbus Symphony, BalletMet 2, and featuring 2015 Cooper-Bing Vocal Competition winner Antonina Chehovkska as Micaela. Sung in French with English surtitles.

Reviews

Women lead opera

"Together, the women aimed to craft a production that avoided cliches. For example, the title character will be portrayed as a well-rounded person rather than a seductress."

A feast for the senses

“Opera Columbus’ new production of Georges Bizet’s “Carmen” offers a feast for the senses: Sterling singing, masterful musicianship and deft direction work in concert to tell the story of the Spanish gypsy Carmen and her litany of lovers.
